Welcome to your Mounjaro (tirzepatide) journey! Mounjaro is a highly effective medication for weight loss, working on both GIP and GLP-1 receptors to reduce your appetite and improve how your body breaks down sugar and fat.
Here are the essential tips to ensure you get the best results safely.
1. How to Use the KwikPen
Mounjaro comes in a pre-filled KwikPen containing four doses (one month’s supply).
- Storage: Keep your pen in the fridge (2°C to 8°C) before its first use. Once in use, you can keep it at room temperature (up to 30°C) for up to 30 days.
- Injection: Inject once a week, on the same day. You can inject it into your stomach, thigh, or upper arm. Rotate your injection sites each week.
- Priming: Always prime your pen before the very first dose of a new pen to ensure the medication flows correctly.
2. Managing Side Effects
The most common side effects are gastrointestinal (nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, and stomach pain), especially when starting or moving up a dose.
- Eat smaller meals: Stop eating when you feel 80% full. Overeating is the #1 cause of nausea on Mounjaro.
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
- Avoid high-fat foods: Fried, greasy, or highly processed foods can trigger severe stomach upset.
3. Diet and Lifestyle
Mounjaro is a tool, not a magic wand. You still need to make lifestyle changes:
- Prioritise Protein: Eat lean proteins (chicken, fish, eggs, tofu) to protect your muscle mass while you lose fat.
- Fibre: Eat plenty of vegetables to prevent constipation.
- Resistance Training: Lifting weights or doing bodyweight exercises helps maintain muscle, ensuring the weight you lose is fat.
