Sildenafil (Viagra) Tips & Patient Guide

Sildenafil is a highly effective, fast-acting treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED). To get the most out of your treatment, here is what you need to know.

1. How to Take Sildenafil

  • Timing: Take one tablet roughly 1 hour before you plan to have sex. It typically starts working within 30 to 60 minutes.
  • Food: For the fastest results, take Sildenafil on an empty stomach. If you take it after a heavy or high-fat meal (like a burger or steak), it can take much longer to start working.
  • Sexual Stimulation: Sildenafil is not a magic pill that causes instant erections. You still need to be sexually aroused for the medication to work.

2. What to Avoid

  • Alcohol: Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol can temporarily impair your ability to get an erection, counteracting the effects of the medication. It can also increase the risk of side effects like dizziness.
  • Grapefruit Juice: Do not drink grapefruit juice while taking Sildenafil, as it can affect how the medicine is broken down in your body and increase side effects.
  • Nitrates: Never take Sildenafil if you are also taking nitrate medications for chest pain (angina) or using recreational ‘poppers’. This combination can cause a fatal drop in blood pressure.

3. Common Side Effects

You may experience mild side effects such as headaches, facial flushing, indigestion, or a stuffy nose. These usually pass quickly. If you experience an erection that lasts longer than 4 hours (priapism) or sudden vision loss, seek emergency medical help immediately.
